Matching extension texture to your native texture is where most extension installs succeed or fail — long before the method, the inches, or the colour come into play. At Fluff Extensions in Denver, we see it first-hand: a perfectly installed set of straight wefts on naturally wavy hair will always look a little off, no matter how precise the application. Texture matching is the non-negotiable foundation, and most clients do not realise how much variation is available until they see the texture options side by side on the consultation table.
The texture categories we work with
Straight (1A-1C). Glossy, low-movement, holds a flat-iron finish easily. This is the easiest texture to find in premium Remy hair and the most forgiving to install. The only real limitation is that truly poker-straight extensions on hair with even slight wave can drift apart after a wash cycle.
Body wave (2A-2B). The most commonly requested texture in Denver because it matches the majority of native hair types we see in the salon. Body wave holds a soft wave pattern air-dried and smooths to straight with a round brush. Versatile, low-maintenance, flattering.
Beach wave (2B-2C). More defined wave than body wave. This is the “effortless summer” texture and the one that requires the most educated product recommendations — using the wrong leave-in will weigh the wave pattern down within a wash cycle.
Curly (3A-3C). A genuinely specialised install. The hair has to be sourced to match your curl pattern specifically — 3A curls and 3C curls are different hair products. Curly extensions require a stylist who installs them regularly and products made for the curl pattern, not generic extension care.
Coily (4A-4C). The least-stocked texture in most studios because it requires specific sourcing, but the one where the right match changes a client’s entire relationship with extensions. If you have 4A-4C hair, the consultation includes confirming the studio actually carries hair that matches your coil pattern rather than “close enough.”
How to match your texture
Do not match styled state
Match to your hair’s air-dried state, not its blowout. A flat-ironed wavy client will end up with straight extensions that do not play with her natural wave when the blowout fades.
Match pattern, not direction
The wave or curl pattern is what needs to match — the direction can be styled. Loose 2B on loose 2B is right; loose 2B on tight 2C will never sit together naturally.
Swatch in person
Always see the texture swatch wet and dry, side by side against your own hair, before approving. Online texture photos lie routinely.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get extensions if my natural hair is curly or coily?
Absolutely, but the studio has to stock or source hair that actually matches your curl pattern. Ask specifically what curl pattern they carry before booking. “We can do curly” is not the same as “we carry 3B wefts in your colour.”
What happens if my texture changes over time?
Hair texture does shift — postpartum, hormonal changes, menopause, and heat damage history can all change the pattern. At move-up appointments we assess whether the existing extension texture is still the right match for your current hair and adjust if needed.
Can I straighten wavy extensions daily?
You can, but it shortens the hair’s lifespan noticeably and can alter the natural pattern permanently. If you want to wear the hair straight most of the time, install straight-texture hair from the start.
What is the most requested texture in Denver?
Body wave (2A-2B), by a wide margin. It matches the majority of Denver native hair types, styles versatilely, and holds up well against the altitude’s dryness.
