The Technique Behind the Look
Balayage is everywhere, but not all balayage is created equal. The difference between beautiful, sun-kissed dimension and stripey, obvious highlights comes down to technique. At Fluff Colour Salon in Denver, balayage is our most requested service — and our colourists have refined their approach over thousands of applications.
Why It Looks Natural
Natural hair is lightest at the ends and around the face — exactly where the sun would hit it. Balayage replicates this pattern by concentrating colour at the ends and mid-lengths while leaving the root area untouched or minimally affected. The hand-painting technique creates soft, diffused edges rather than the sharp lines that foils produce.
The Denver Advantage
Denver clients get more natural sun exposure than most cities, which means your colourist can use the sun’s natural lightening as part of the colour design. By strategically placing balayage where the sun will enhance it, the result evolves naturally between appointments and looks even more lived-in over time.
Not One Technique — Many
What most people call balayage actually encompasses several techniques that a skilled colourist mixes and matches. Open-air painting for soft, gradual lightening. Foil-assisted balayage for more lift and brightness. Teasy-lights for added root shadow. Your colourist selects and combines techniques based on your starting colour, desired result, and hair texture.
Maintenance and Longevity
One of balayage’s biggest advantages is its grow-out. Because there is no harsh root line, most clients stretch 12 to 16 weeks between appointments. A toning gloss at the midpoint can refresh brightness without a full balayage session, making this one of the most cost-effective colour techniques over time.
Experience Matters
Balayage is a skill that develops over years of practice. The colourists at Fluff specialise in this technique and bring thousands of hours of experience to every application.
