3. Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse

Secrets of a Hair Extension Specialist: What Clients Don’t Know About Getting Extensions

Good morning Fluff fans! From the outside, getting hair extensions may seem like a simple, straightforward process – but in reality I have to say there’s much more to it than meets the eye. Join me on behind the chair as a Fluff Hair Extensions Studio specialist. I’d love to reveal some of the special secrets of the trade!

The Art of Consultation

Every successful hair extension journey begins with a thorough consultation. This is where the stylist analyses the client’s hair, discussing their lifestyle, desired look, and hair care routine. It’s much more than just choosing length and color – it’s about creating a custom, seamless blend that compliments each individual client.

Yesterday I had such a great consultation with a woman that had been experiencing significant hair-loss after having Covid-19 twice… and a bunch of boosters, which many believe lead to increased hair-loss. Getting hair extentions is a big decision and investment and should not be rushed into.  I highly recommend taking your time, doing research and meeting with a handful of different salons and specialists.  Just like color, sticking with the same stylist will ensure a successful hair extensions journey.  “Chair hopping” can increase hair and scalp damage and often times lead to step backs in your hair goals. Hair extensions are a solution to a problem.  It is important that your hair stylist takes the time to sit with you and listen to your unique problems and then offer solutions. 

Sometimes the stylist you are meeting with may not specialize in the solution that is right for your unique problem.  The best and most professional hair stylist will offer you a referral to another stylist, salon and or company that is better equipped to help you with your problem. This particular client, given the location and the amount of hair loss she was experiencing, the more well known hair extension methods such as I-tips, K-tips, Hand-tied, Tape-in or even clip in would have been too heavy for her natural hair causing more damage and would have transitioned her insecurity from “can everyone see my thinning hair” to “can everyone see my hair extensions”. The problem was feeling insecure with how her hair looked, putting in a well known method would have given her more hair, but not solved the actual problem of feeling insecure with her hair. 

For her unique hair problem, I recommended a hair topper.  A hair topper addresses her thinning hair AND will address the hair insecurity. One has two choices with a hair topper:  You can start with a clip-in version OR you can get a tape-in version that is a more permanent option.  I consider myself to be a true professional and specialist and I truly love sitting down with my clients face to face and simply listening, I also love troubleshooting and I love finding solutions to my clients problems…. even if that solution requires me to offer them a referral or be able to offer a recommendation where a more expensive solution could be offered.

Color Matching Genius

Hopefully we make it look easy, but do you think your stylist just glances at your hair and picks a matching color from a swatch book? It’s not so simple, I wish it were! Perfect color matching involves a keen eye, understanding of color theory, and sometimes even custom dying the extensions. The goal is to achieve a seamless blend that looks entirely natural.

The Physics of Placement

Where the extensions are placed on the head is not arbitrary – it’s a strategic process governed by the laws of physics. Placements are determined by the client’s hair density, head shape, and natural hair movement. Incorrect placement can lead to discomfort and unnatural movement. We take pride in our methodical approach to ensure a comfortable, natural-looking result.

Perfecting the Blend

Once the extensions are applied, the stylist then meticulously cuts and styles the hair to blend the extensions flawlessly with the client’s natural hair. This requires a keen eye, a steady hand, and a deep understanding of how different hair types respond to cutting and styling.

Oops… I Did it Again! – Common Hair Extension Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Hi Fluff fans! Have you ever had one of those “Oh no!” hair moments? Welp, you’re not alone! We at Fluff Hair Extensions Studio have heard it all. So, let’s dive into some of the most common hair extension mistakes and how to dodge them.

The Tug-of-War Mishap

Much of our staff at the time would probably remember… Well, let’s call her ‘Jane’. She loved her new extensions, but the combing… argh! She’d yank her brush through her hair like she was deep sea fishing and caught a monster of a fish! In the end, her extensions suffered, and so did her natural hair. The lesson? She finally got it right with a lot of coaching, as she figured out she should always hold the extensions with one hand while  gently combing from the ends and working her way up with the other. A natural boar bristle detangling brush can be your best friend!

Like a Desert Situation

Then there was a client of ours who thought washing extensions daily was a good idea (she got her extensions somewhere else so didn’t have the advantage of a Fluff consultation!). She ended up with extensions as dry as the Sahara. Hair extensions don’t produce natural oils like our scalp, so over-washing can leave them parched. Washing 2-3 times a week is plenty, and remember Alter Ego Italys Silk Blend Oil or De-Lite Protection Oil is your hair extensions best friend!

The Product Overload Predicament

And who could forget ‘Sarah’? Though we recommended against tape-ins for someone in her line of work, where let’s just say she would get very sweaty at night, she did not listen and insisted on coupling tape-ins with sew-ins, even though her hair was naturally greasy (on top of it all). I think she also fell in love with every hair product she saw, and her extensions paid the price and her tape-ins would slip out every few days. Remember, ladies and gents, less is more when it comes to most products and tape-ins simply are not a good fit for hair that is overly oily or if you put the wrong products in your hair, or if you happen to sweat… a lot! Stick to a quality shampoo, conditioner, and a heat protectant that are approved by your trusty stylist… and if you stylist recommends against tape-ins, be sure to listen! And thanks again for the bad review when the tape-ins slipped out and for not listening to us in the first place!

Hi Fluff fans! Want bold, beautiful hair color that stands out in a crowd this summer? Summer Hair Care: How to Protect Your Hair from Sun, Salt, and Chlorine

Summer is a time of sunshine, beach trips, and pool parties. But with all that fun comes a bit of a downside for your luscious locks. The sun’s rays, salt water, and pool chlorine can all play havoc with your hair, leaving it dry, damaged, and dull. But don’t fret, Fluff Denver has got your back, or rather, your hair!

Famous Movie Hairdos: How They Shaped Character Personalities and Trends

Hi Fluff fans! So, I was watching a movie last night with my mom and I caught myself (as usual) noticing the details in the hair on the actors in the film, especially since it happened to be a classic film that we were watching. I quickly became intrigued with the hair that they had created and began noticing how it enhanced the characters and in my opinion, the entire movie.  I’m guessing I’m not alone and we have all been entranced by the mesmerizing hairstyles in our favorite movies. So… Long story longer, I woke up early this morning thinking I should write about most iconic movie hairdos that have not only shaped characters but also our own hair trends!

Princess Leia’s Cinnamon Buns: Star Wars

First off, it’s impossible to ignore Princess Leia’s legendary cinnamon bun hairstyle in Star Wars. While saving the galaxy and being a general badass, she also managed to make a bold fashion statement. This unique hairstyle screams confidence and originality, just like Leia herself. And hey, who knows, maybe it’s also a secret weapon against Stormtroopers?

I do recommend high quality vitamins and eating a clean diet. Personally, I take a food based vitamin that’s intended for pre-natal use and often a hair, skin and nails vitamin and a liquid collagen supplement from a company called Spoiled Child! I think it even tastes really good.

Step 1: Prep Your Hair

Begin by washing your hair with a high-quality shampoo and conditioner. To add an extra lift, use a volumizing shampoo. We recommend the Alter Ego Italy line for ultimate hair pampering right in your bathroom.

Step 2: Towel Dry Your Hair, But Gently

Gently towel-dry your hair to about 60-70% dryness before starting the blowout process. We recommend using a microfiber towel to minimize damage and frizz. Squeeze the hair with the towel, do not rub the hair,  Rubbing causes damage to the hair and also frizz.  Squeezing excess moisture is more gentle to the hair and helps keep the hair cuticle smooth.  

Step 3: Apply a Heat Protectant

Shield your hair from potential heat damage by applying a heat protectant. This creates a barrier between your hair and the heat, keeping it healthy and shiny. We stock several excellent options at Fluff’s retail area.

Step 4: Section Your Hair

Sectioning makes the blowout process more manageable. Depending on your hair thickness, divide it into 4-6 sections and use clips to hold them in place.

Step 5: Time to Blow-dry

Blow-dry your hair starting from the roots, moving to the mid-lengths, and finally, the ends. Always keep the dryer’s nozzle downward to help smooth your hair cuticles. Our favorite dryers? Ga.Ma. Italy, available at Fluff, is known for its excellent performance.

Use a round brush as you dry each section. Place the round brush under your hair and move it slowly down to the ends, following it with the dryer. This creates that salon-style bounce and volume.

Once you’re done with all sections, switch your dryer to the cool setting and give your hair a quick once-over. This helps to ‘set’ your style, adding shine and reducing frizz.

Step 8: Final Touches  

Finish your blowout with a few drops of hair serum for extra shine and softness. To prolong the life of your blowout, try to avoid touching your hair too much, as the oils from your hands can weigh it down and make it look greasy. Pro tip: Spritz dry shampoo in your clean hair along your part and around hair line.  This sets your dry shampoo up for success absorbing dirt and oil BEFORE it has a chance to settle.  Re-spritz before working out and before going to bed.
