Effortless Waves, No Ocean Required
Beach waves are one of the most universally flattering and requested styles. That relaxed, textured look works for casual weekends, date nights, and everything in between. The best part? You do not need a beach or even a curling iron. Here are three methods our stylists at Fluff in Denver recommend.
Method 1: The Flat Iron Wave
This is the fastest heat method. Clamp a 1-inch flat iron about 2 inches from your roots. Twist the iron 180 degrees away from your face and slowly glide it down the strand. The slower you go, the more defined the wave. Alternate the direction of your twist on each section for a more natural, undone look. Finish with a texturizing spray.
Method 2: Overnight Braids
For heatless waves, braid damp hair before bed. Two loose braids create a wider, beachier wave, while four to six smaller braids create tighter, more defined texture. Apply a light mousse before braiding for hold, and let your hair dry completely before unbraiding in the morning. Shake out with your fingers — never brush.
Method 3: The Salt Spray Scrunch
If your hair has any natural wave or texture, a good salt spray may be all you need. Apply generously to damp hair, scrunch from ends to roots, and either air dry or diffuse on low heat. The salt creates grip and texture that defines your natural wave pattern. Choose a spray that also contains moisturising ingredients to prevent the salt from drying your hair.
Making Waves Last
Second-day waves often look better than first-day waves. Sleep with your hair in a loose, high bun to preserve the texture. In the morning, shake it out and add a quick spritz of dry texture spray for refreshed volume and hold.
The Right Cut and Colour for Waves
Beach waves look best on hair with layers and dimension. Long layers create movement, and balayage or highlights emphasise the peaks and valleys of each wave. If beach waves are your go-to style, mention that to your colourist — they will place colour to maximise the effect.
