Three Techniques, Explained Simply
These three terms get mixed up constantly, and the confusion is understandable — they all involve lightening sections of hair. But they are distinct techniques with different results, maintenance requirements, and ideal candidates. Here is a clear breakdown from Fluff Colour Salon in Denver.
Traditional Highlights
Highlights use foils to isolate sections of hair and lift them to a lighter shade. The result is consistent, even lightening from root to tip throughout the foiled sections. Highlights can be fine and subtle or chunky and dramatic depending on the size of the foil sections. Maintenance: touch-ups every 6 to 8 weeks as roots grow in.
Balayage
Balayage is a freehand painting technique where lightener is swept onto the surface of hair sections. The result is soft, graduated lightening that is concentrated at the ends and diffused toward the roots. Balayage looks more natural than traditional highlights because it mimics how the sun lightens hair. Maintenance: 12 to 16 weeks between sessions due to the soft root transition.
Ombre
Ombre is a colour effect — dark roots transitioning to notably lighter ends with a visible gradient. While balayage creates a subtle, scattered pattern, ombre is a more deliberate, uniform transition. Think of ombre as a horizontal line of change while balayage is a scattered, painterly effect. Maintenance: 10 to 14 weeks depending on root visibility preference.
Which Is Best for You?
Choose highlights if: You want even brightness throughout your hair, you like consistent coverage, or you want maximum lightness.
Choose balayage if: You prefer a natural, sun-kissed look, you want low-maintenance colour, or you like a lived-in aesthetic.
Choose ombre if: You want a noticeable light-to-dark gradient, you like a bolder contrast, or you want to keep your roots entirely natural.
Or Combine Them
Many of our best results come from combining techniques — foil highlights near the root for brightness with balayage through the mid-lengths and ends for softness. Your colourist will recommend the best approach for your goals.
